Über diesen Titel

What is the meaning of life?

It's a question every thoughtful person has pondered at one time or another. Indeed, it may be the biggest question of all - at once profound and universal, but also deeply personal.

We want to understand the world in which we live, but we also want to understand how to make our own lives as meaningful as possible; to know not only why we're living, but that we're doing it with intention, purpose, and ethical commitment. But how, exactly, do we find that meaning, and develop that commitment? How can we grasp why we are here? Or how we should proceed? And to whom, exactly, we should listen as we shape the path we will walk? This comprehensive 36-lecture series from a much-honored scholar is an invigorating way to begin or continue your pursuit of these questions, and it requires no previous background in philosophical or religious thought.

It offers a rigorous and wide-ranging exploration of what various spiritual, religious, and philosophical traditions from both the East and West have contributed to this profound line of questioning, sharing insights from sources that include ancient Indian texts, such as:

  • The Bhagavad-Gita
  • Foundational Chinese texts like the Daodejing and the Chuang Tzu
  • Classical Western texts, such as Aristotle's Nichomachean Ethics and Marcus Aurelius's Meditations
  • Modern philosophers and writers like David Hume, Immanuel Kant, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Leo Tolstoy
  • The unique perspectives offered by Native Americans, in this case, the Lakota Sioux medicine man and writer, John Lame Deer
  • Plus more recent and contemporary philosophers, such as Mohandas Gandhi and the Dalai Lama.

Profesor Jay, presets how the difference ways each important philosophy gives an answer about the meaning of life. The only one I miss is Christianity. Excelent presented, clear, concise and interesting.

A great review of most important wold philosophies

I have thoroughly enjoyed these conferences from beginning to end. While I am somewhat familiar with some of the philosophical points of view presented in the lectures, I am by no means really knowledgeable in Philosophy.
In my opinion Jay Garfield presents these topics in a very clear, passionate and enjoyable way.
I definitely want to go through the conferences again, as they contain lots of fascinating information and one time is not enough to grasp it all.
I really recommend to listen to these conference if you are interested in the topic.

Absolutely wonderful

Was hat Ihnen das Hörerlebnis von The Meaning of Life: Perspectives from the World's Great Intellectual Traditions besonders unterhaltsam gemacht?

Thank you professor for sharing your extensive knowledge of these diverse approaches to this ultimate question.

This course does not provide as much insight to western philosophies so if you are looking for something that covers each and every philosopher in the world, you will not get that here. I do not think that was the objective of this course either.

It seems like we are provided only with the western perspective and the professor has taken upon himself to provide us with other perspectives in addition to a couple of western ones. The objective is not to provide us with an answer to the question but with further material for thought beyond the singular western one that we tend to get. The objective is to help us widen our horizons and whet our curiosity.

In my case, the professor was definitely successful in doing that. I was curious for a long time about wisdoms from different cultures including those that I would not have even thought of but I found myself surfing the internet endlessly and grabbing bits and pieces here and there. Perhaps, that was the journey I needed to be ready for this course.

This course has been great in providing me an organised and well informed starting point from which I can explore better. The professor did a great job in curating from all the content that is out there and presenting it in an understandable manner. The key message I took away is to keep exploring in order to find my own truth that enables me to live my life happily, generously, spontaneously, creatively and compassionately.
Thank you professor. I do hope to meet you in person some day.

Great summary of some world philosophies delivered in an easy to understand manner
