    Inhaltsangabe

The Man from St Petersburg is a dark tale of family secrets and political consequences. Ken Follett's masterful storytelling brings to life the danger of a world on the brink of war.

It is just before the outbreak of World War I, and Britain must enlist the aid of Russia. Czar Nicholas' nephew is to visit London for secret naval talks with Lord Walden, who has lived in Russia and has a Russian wife, Lydia. But there are other people who are interested in the arrival of Prince Alexei: the Waldens' only daughter, Charlotte - wilful, idealistic, and with an awakening social conscience; Basil Thompson, head of the Special Branch; and, above all, Feliks Kschessinky, the ruthless Russian anarchist. No one could have foretold that Lydia should recognize Feliks or that she might put her own daughter's life at risk for his sake.

As the secret negotiations progress, the destinies of these characters become ineluctably enmeshed. And as Europe prepares for the catastrophe of war, the final private tragedy which will shatter the complacency of the Waldens is acted out.

    Very exciting story.

It is the first Audible book read by Richard Armitage for me. I don't regret having chosen this one. Armitage has a great voice and it's much fun listening to him. I've read the novel in German, so it was easy for me to understand. The story is very exciting, every time the asassin seems to get caught,it comes otherwise. I'm looking forward to listening to other novels read by Richard Armitage.

    Easy listening

British actor Richard Armitage would probably have my undivided attention reading a telephone book ;-) He has a pleasant and easy to listen to voice that varies with the characters he's portraying.

This makes up for some shortcomings of the story itself... and the over-dramatic finale, but all in, easy listening with a historcal background of the time leading up to WW1

    The Man from St Petersburg

Starts a bit slowly but gets very exciting towards the end. A pleasant change that the good guys and the bad guys are not so clearly defined. The ending is a bit ‚convenient‘ and not very original, but all in all an entertaining story.
    Well read.

    dünne Geschichte

Follett hat schon spannendere Geschichten Geschrieben. Diese Story ist ziemlich dünn und das Ende vorsehbar. Das kann der Sprecher auch nicht retten.

    not one of his best

in my personal opinion the story was ok, not one of his better novels.
for me the speaker's way to change the female voices as if they were playing in a Christmas Panto made it worse.

    Pretty obvious

Ken Follett seems to be running out of new ideas. This book is so foreseeable and boring.

    History is exiting

A story of politics, family and love, a real pageturner until the dramatic end!
