It's not always that I get to love both main characters equally.
My heart broke for Ian, clearly on the autism spectre, a very different man in a world that didn't appreciate or understand anything less than normal. He was institutionalized and went through horrific things in the asylum until he was rescued by his big brother, Hart. I loved how close the Mackenzie brothers were, always protecting each other at all costs.
Beth is equally a different kind of heroine. A widow with poor upbringing, having inherited a large fortune after the woman that employed her as a companion died of old age.
She is frugal, smart, brave, funny, open minded and loyal. She's accepted and loved Ian from the very beginning and was fierce in her desire to protect him, going as far as solving the murder mystery for which Ian was suspected.
I was so moved by their romance, their mutual loyalty and respect. And the audio narration was amazing! Angela Dowe is simply fantastic!
