Über diesen Titel

A queen of punk before her time. A duo on the brink of stardom. A night that will define their story for ever.

Opal is a fiercely independent young woman pushing against the grain in her style and attitude, a Black punk artist before her time. Despite her unconventional looks, Opal believes she can be a star. So when the aspiring British singer/songwriter Neville Charles discovers her one night, she takes him up on his offer to make rock music together.

In early '70s New York City, just as she's finding her niche as part of a flamboyant and funky creative scene, a rival band signed to her label brandishes a Confederate flag at a promotional concert. Opal's bold protest and the violence that ensues set off a chain of events that will not only change the lives of those she loves but also be a deadly reminder that repercussions are always harsher for women, especially Black women, who dare to speak their truth.

Decades later, as Opal considers a 2016 reunion with Nev, music journalist S. Sunny Shelton seizes the chance to curate an oral history about her idols. Sunny thought she knew most of the stories leading up to the cult duo's most politicised chapter, but as her interviews dig deeper, a nasty new allegation from an unexpected source threatens everything.

Provocative and haunting, The Final Revival of Opal & Nev introduces a bold new name in contemporary fiction and a heroine the likes of which we've not seen in storytelling.

Great story, plot, and character development.
I’ve read Daisy Jones and The Six and they are both quite different stories. Give it a go - you won’t be disappointed!

Just brilliant

A few years ago I read "Daisy Jones and the Six". It was the first novel in an oral history format for me, and I really enjoyed it. The band members and their music felt so real I kept searching the internet for them because I couldn’t believe it was all completely fictional. I was actually quite frustrated because I really, really wanted to see the band on stage and listen to some of the songs described in the book.

Opal and Nev never had that effect on me, neither the characters nor their music ever really came to life. Even Opal. who's supposed to be this fierce and inspiring woman, a regular force of nature, remained as bland and two-dimensional as all the other characters, only with more fashion sense. Speaking of which - her outrageous stage outfits, her accessories, her make-up and headdress are described over and over again, more often than not in great detail. I'm not particularly interested in fashion even in real life, and Virgil going on and on about his 'pieces' regularly bored me to tears. Not that the other (not clothes-related) parts were interesting. I found it hard to stay focused on the story, and it took me over a week to finish the book. The multiple footnotes and editor's notes didn't help, I found them distracting, and Sonny didn't really add anything to the actual story.

The narrators were well chosen for their parts and did an okay job. I didn't enjoy listening to them, though. If I don't care about a character (and I didn't care about any of the characters in this book), I don't care about their voice either.

Didn't work for me
