Über diesen Titel

A city has to give up one of its secrets for a detective to catch a killer.

Liverpool is in the midst of an emergency. Several people have been poisoned. But DI Tara Grogan is not on the case. Instead, she has an in-tray full of mundane tasks and jealously watches from the sidelines as the high-profile investigation unfolds.

One such task is looking into the suicide of a company executive. Probing a little deeper, Grogan begins to smell a rat. All is not well at Harbinson Fine Foods, and with the city on high alert and its people on edge, the detective begins to suspect a connection to the main investigation.

Struggling to convince her superiors of her lead, Grogan strikes up a friendship with the deceased's lover and company secretary, the seductive Jez Riordan.

Once again, only by overstepping the boundaries between work and pleasure, can Grogan begin to see the whole picture. With more murders inevitable and the main investigation stalled, the detective enters the ring and must parry the moves of powerful and motivated people to nail the suspect.

I was not a keen fan of the ending of the previous book so my expectations were not that high when I started this installment. And when Tara started to get too close to Jez I thought ‘here we go again’… But no, the story continued to be good, was very fast paced and convincing. Another plus are the characters who develop nicely. Just one point, the more Robert McCracken emphasizes how petite Tara is, the less credible it becomes how many beatings she can take :-) But this is a minor detail and not a knock on the book.

Very good

The story is dragged out in every situation where drama can be milked.
Like in book 1 Tara gets involved with a witness/ suspect for no obvious reason. A woman in her 30s, especially when portrayed as clever, would hardly call someone they met for a few brief moments a friend.

The narrator with her high pitched voice escalates over and over again, but isn't capable of preparing for her job. In book one, she spoke in the clearest British English while reading "his Belfast accent came out" - baaad mistake. In this book she doesn't even get the name of County Armagh right, let alone make the effort of getting a faint idea of the accent.
Nor does she try and google the pronunciation of the name Riordan, but says Ree-aawr-dayne, which breaks the heart of every Irish person and is highly unprofessional.
hm
not worth the money, not worth the time.

naive and also badly narrated
