I enjoyed the 1st half of the book more than the second half. The last few chapters seemed rushed and the story line began to be less detailed, especially Harry's feelings when finding his girlfriend.

Good read but disappointing ending

The story is well written and very engaging – it flows nicely and is easy to follow as an audiobook. I enjoyed the atmosphere and the way the characters are introduced.

What bothered me a little is the ending. Everything unfolds very quickly, almost too fast, and it leaves quite a lot open to interpretation. For me, that felt like a missed opportunity, because some questions remain unanswered. For example – did Inspector Harry Hole actually manage to save Birgitta? I understand this might be part of the author’s style, leaving things open-ended and letting the reader fill in the blanks, but I personally would have preferred at least some clearer hint.

As it stands, the ending felt a bit rushed – suddenly the inspector is parachuting, and I was left wishing for a more satisfying closure.

Das erste Buch ist ein wirkliches Meisterwerk! Jo Nesbø hält immer noch sein hohes Niveau, aber dieses Debut ist fantastisch erzählt!

The book is superbly written by someone who obviously enjoys writing. It moves at the right pace and the reader is treated like an adult.. nothing is "hammered home" and the thoughts and actions of the lead character are understandable.

The description of some characters and many scenes are extremely well done. One can often imagine the scenes very vividly. There is no excess violence or unnecessary gore.

The reader is fantastic. He is very well suited to the story and the characters. Particularly the explanations by aboriginal characters make you feel as if you are sitting next to an old friend.

I like Simon Beckett and Michael Connnelly, but this book beats them all.

The reader speaks clearly enough so that I can also recommend it to non native speakers.

My favourite audio book of the year

The Bat war mein erstes (Hör-)Buch von Jo Nesbo. Ich habe eigentlich viel mehr erwartet, zu keinem Zeitpunkt kam richtige Spannung auf. Einzig Harry Cole als Hauptcharakter war durchaus sympathisch.
Generell nur für Harry Cole Fans zu empfehlen.

The first book I’ve listened to on audible that I regret buying. Didn’t finish btw… It shows a 90s patriarchal perspective on life even though it tries so hard to do the opposite. Women are either victims, barmaids or pretty - or all at once but nothing more.

From a 22st century view it’s disappointing

I tried really hard but never really got into the story. I thought it lacket tension, creativity and climax. Have read better crime stories or thrillers.
