Über diesen Titel
Five days in the grinder. Five days of endless pain and no sleep. Five days of the hardest work imaginable-it’s the work of surviving and not one second of it has been easy.
This is the story of how the world ends as we know it. It’s the story of the apocalypse. It’s the story of how we lost.
The fifth day begins in a bloody fight that stretches across the globe because, as you will see, the consuming hate, the greedy hunger, and violent anger found in the zombies was not instilled in them by the infection. No, these traits were already there even before they turned. These are human traits and they are never more apparent than when our backs are against the wall.
From the Staten Island kindergarten teacher, to the Armenian plumber, to the Chinese shoe salesman, all the things that makes zombies so terrible is a part of who we are.
Those of us who can fight against these urges are called the good guys. There’s very few of us left at the beginning of day five and by the end...well, you will have to see for yourself if there are any good guys left when the clock strikes midnight on humanity.

A slightly perplexing ending to my fav. Z. series
I love this series and I love the narration. I have recommended the audio books to many people.
The ending is a bit strange, abrupt and a tad disappointing, because the series as a whole was so consistently great.
Of course anyone reading this will suspect that I only feel that way because I hyped the series up too much for myself and even the best ending had to disappoint me, but I think I can claim that the ending is objectively not up to the standard the series has set so far.
I don't want to spoil too much, but I think I can say that most people reading/listening to it will come away with the feeling that maybe the author ran out of time or room (pages) to properly finish the series and so he pulled one of those "I'll just tie up all the lose ends in a epilogue."-moves.
I have loved zombie stories my whole live and haven't wavered even when everybody suddenly said that the genre is played out and boring maybe 10 years ago. This series, among a few others, proves that that was far from the truth.
I am a bit of a purist though. I only like zombie stories about the beginning, the outbreak, when regular people are suddenly confronted with the end of the world as they knew it and have to use their wits and the tools they have at hand to survive the mayhem.
Those zombie stories that play years after the apocalypse, when the zombies have become part of the environment, like bad weather and all the characters are hardened super-survivors and jaded zombie killers, are not really interesting to me.
So this series, which tells you the story of the outbreak from day 1 to day 5 in great detail, is right up my alley.
That might have influenced my verdict a bit, but I have no doubts that this is objectively a top notch product and nobody giving it a chance will be disappointed with it.
I wish the ending would have been as perfect as the rest of the series, but I know, that is asking a lot.
Even the most renowned and famous authors struggle with that. (See Stephen King's "Dark Tower" series.)
The narrator is absolutely great. One of the best I ever heard. He somehow manages to give every character their own distinct voice, to the point where the audio book almost feels like a audio/radio play with a cast of voice actors. All the old characters sound old, all the young characters sound young and all the female characters sound female and also different from each other. On top of that he also manages to do the different accents without making them sound like caricatures.
No idea how that man manages to pull all of that off, but he did. It is fantastic.
