It was just a random mutation - one of a billion that happen in viruses every day. But this one was different. It exploded out of Somalia and spread across the oceans before anybody thought to look up from their cell phones to see what was going on.

The infected breathed the virus into the air around them, spreading it through the cities faster than anyone thought possible. Hospitals were overwhelmed. Police lines crumbled. Quarantine sites disintegrated. Cities started to collapse.

Through the chaos, some, like Zed Zane, discovered the virus wasn't going to kill them, but change them. Change them into something different, and leave them in a world where the word "survival" took on an older, more brutal meaning.

After a warm up phase of 30 Minutes I was hooked all the way to the end . 50+ hours went by in a Flash. its just as good as Day By Day Armageddon, or the Morning Star Strand book series!

A great book series, wonderfully narrated by Phil Thron. Bobby Adair managed to write a book that combines action with deep characters and a thrilling storyline that had me hold my breath. A perfect mix of action, dialogues and description of the scenery that feels very immersive.

I decided for this audiobook because I usually listen to audiobook at work everyday for 8 hours, so I figured, that around 50 hours of listening is wirth the deal, no matter how bad the boots could get.

It was actually a pleasant surprise. The humor was never too much and never at the wrong time. The story is well thought out, even though some might say there are plot holes or inconsistencies that could be called plotarmor. Of course there is stuff going on only to further the story but c'est la vie.
As far as plot armor and stereotypes based on the genre are concerned - at first I thought it's too much, or too stereotypical. But as it turns out, the author got me again and again, even playing with stereotypical behaviors and situations of the genre.

All in all, it is really worth listening to it. also because it's 9 books in one. If I had to wait for the next one back when they came out, I'd be pretty mad.

have fun listening to it. A word of caution: If you get irritated by listening to dialogues full of cursing it might be not for you.

I really enjoyed every minute of this series. The story is thrilling enough and full of dark humor.
It's got a lot of deeper meaning and social criticism packed in a lot of strong language (Hey, it's the apocalypse!).
It's about friendship and love of a socially awkward character.
It's much to think about... if you want.
Phil Thron's voice acting is just as important as the story itself. He did an incredible job in giving the characters a voice by giving their voices character.

Strongly recommended!

A unusual and interesting approach to the Zombie apocalypse premise.

Very well written, relatable, sympathetic characters, lots of adventure, good action and a lot of "bang for the buck", so to say.

Never gets boring and very substantial. With that I mean not just the run time of 55 hours, but that this series will really give you the feeling that you experienced a lot together with the two main characters, once you are finished.

I'm considering getting the 10th book too, which is actually unusual because normally I don't like Zombie stories that play many years after the outbreak, when all the characters are experienced survivors and zombie killers and the zombies have become part of the environment and of every day life.
I just like the two main characters so much that I am interested in checking up on them.

The only small flaw for me, which is entirely based on my personal taste and preferences, is that the beginning of the outbreak is kind of, sort of glossed over a little, with the main character kind of sleeping through the first day or two and then first being in jail and then holed up in a dormitory while most of the mayhem happens off screen, so to say.

The beginning, how everything gradually turns to chaos and normal people have to deal with civilization crumbling around them, is what I like the most about this genre and books that really linger and go into detail with that are my favorites. But it isn't as if this story would be totally bereft of that, it is just not quite as much as I would have liked, but it still won me over for the aforementioned reasons.

The narrator is very good and manages well to give the different characters their own voices.

Sympathische Charaktere, gute Geschichte, angenehmer Sprecher. Man sollte sich nicht an "deftigen Ausdrücken" stören. ;) Ich habe oft stundenlang durchgehört und manches Mal sogar gelacht. Schade, dass ich nun vorerst Abschied nehmen muss von den Protagonisten aber irgendwann höre ich es mir vielleicht noch einmal an.

Wow, episch

The protagonist is depressing and annoying.
He acts as if he's not important but reacts to anything as if he thinks he's the protagonist in his own drama.
He has a low oppinion of himself but gets easily hurt by others disliking him.
He acknowledges that his emotional outbursts are bad in his survival situation but everytime something emotional comes up he leans into the outburst as if he was acting it out in front of a theater audience.

Then there are some problems with the story, mainly two that stand out.
One problem is that the bulk of the ppl are either surprisingly dumb or needlessly mean, that doesn't work in the less exaggerated world wich is trying to be more grounded in reality than other stories of this genre.
And the other problem I see is the tendency of changing world facts to fit the mood of the story. For example in one scene the protagonist learns that travelling with anything less than an armored car is pretty much suicide and since this scene is meant to be a horror scene the story pushes infected at the protagonist from every direction and it's nearly his end. Then one book later he is really mad about something and decides in his rage to ride around in a motorbike and suddenly the infected are stunned and confused by the the sound of his vehicle so he can ride around town in his mad rage and feel like some biker badass instead of the dead dumbass he should be if we go by the facts the story established earlier.
