Über diesen Titel

Following the tremendous success of Jane Eyre Charlotte Brontë returned to pen a novel every bit as romantic and compelling as her first, but with deeper, heartier themes as she captured the social and political currents of the newly industrialized United Kingdom of 1812. Set in a chaotic time in England, during the height of the Napoleonic Wars, Caroline Helstone's world is turned upside down when she meets the vivacious Shirley Keeldar. Shirley becomes a beacon of light for Caroline as the two become close friends. However, Caroline is soon shocked to discover that Shirley has won the affections of Robert Moore, the impoverished mill owner whom she loves. Fully representative of Yorkshire life at the time, Brontë's second novel is completely gripping, unrelenting and utterly wrenching in its portrayal.

Shirley is one of my favourite books with amazingly written characters and a great story arc, though the author's tendency to moralise, her love for nature and poetry and the high amount of French are probably not for everyone so some people might find it dull at times. But even without understanding a word of French it's easy to follow the story.

It's read really well. The speaker didn't always give everyone the right tone of voice but she did 90% of the time and in every other point it's read perfectly, down to the singing which is absolutely charming, the French accents, Yorkshire dialect and pronunciation and the tone used for the story teller's little essays as well as most of the different characters.

A great book read well

At half length the novel loses its grip and meanders about in a variety of chapter filling episodes.
The reading is Ok as far a the narrative and female voices go.
Male characters, particularly the Moore brothers, sound downright awful. Not like men at all, but rather like silly sops. The last umpteen chapters are indeed a pain to listen to. I listened my way through the 24 odd hours but it was not always a pleasure.

Awful rendition of some male voices
