How long must we pay for the crimes of our youth?

It has been almost 10 years since Matthias graduated from the elite Blackburne School, where his roommate and best friend, Fritz, fled into the woods, never to be heard from again, in the middle of their senior year. Fritz vanished just after an argument over Matthias' breaking of the school's honor code, and Matthias has long been haunted by the idea that his betrayal led to his friend's disappearance.

Years later, after hitting the fast lane in New York as a successful novelist - then falling twice as hard - Matthias is stuck, a failure as a writer, a boyfriend, a person. When he is offered the opportunity to return to Blackburne as an English teacher, he sees it as a chance to put his life back together. But once on campus, Matthias gets swiftly drawn into the past and is driven to find out what happened to Fritz. He partners with a curmudgeonly local retired cop and tries to solve the case, dealing with campus politics, the shocking death of a student, Fritz's complicated and powerful Washington, DC, family, and his own place in the privileged world of Blackburne.

The Story is well constructed, interwoven with the necessary flashbacks in time, while not interrupting the flow of the more and more gripping narrative to much. The characters and their evolvement over a period of 10 years are credible, interesting and psychologically well defined. That applies to the main characters as well as the supporting and fringe personae. The book is a blend of mystery, crime story, thriller and development-novel. The background and
mileu is mainly that of a renowned US private boarding school, which the author seems well acquainted with. So why not full marks? Perhaps it‘s my personal stance, but I find it difficult to believe, that intelligent people don‘t develop methods over several years, to come to terms with childhood-traumata. If, that is, you are indeed aware of them and could probably find help, professional or orherwise. Surely at least some of the most affected persons could have found a means to avoid the destructive long-term consequences of wrong decisions and suffered pain in the distant past? I just got a little impatient with the irrational behaviour of the one or another. I don‘t want to spoil the suspense for coming readers, but the story does in the end conclude on a conciliatory note, while not wrapping everything up tidily. „Shadow of Lions“ for me is nevertheless good, gripping and recommended reading.

Eine spannende Geschichte, die fesselnd erzählt wird. Der Sprecher ist sehr angenehm. Man kann fast nicht mehr aufhören und fiebert dem weiteren Ereignissen entgegen. Empfehlenswert.
