Über diesen Titel
Getting my Ph.D. is a bit of a challenge. Not falling for my hot, straight, grumpy mentor is next to impossible.
Six months undercover on a ranch known for rehabilitation is my ticket to finishing my degree. Me? I’m just a guy who’s gay, terrified of horses, and somehow convinced this is a good idea. The owners are in on my secret, but Max, my rugged, horse-whispering mentor, isn’t. Did I mention he’s infuriatingly attractive?
Thrown together, it's not just the horses we're taming. As Max and I dance around each other, an unexpected moment of closeness threatens to unravel everything. Apparently, we're both hiding secrets. Falling for him isn't part of my research, yet here I am, questioning everything for a man who might just be worth the risk.
I’m learning that the biggest discoveries often come from the heart, but will it be Max or the horses that push me to my limits?
Turns out it’s both…and a donkey named Milo.
©2024 Romeo Alexander (P)2024 Books Unite People, LLCOh my… I just love Romeo Alexander’s MMCs.
Riley is such a beautifully layered character. He’s a force of nature—an optimistic ray of sunshine with loyal puppy eyes. Always kind, endlessly forgiving, never complaining, and incredibly deep and intelligent. He appears innocent on the surface but is anything but, and he’s constantly underestimated, which makes his character really intriguing. I adored his perspective on the world.
Max, on the other hand, is his complete opposite: rugged, perpetually grumpy, not a people person in the slightest, and someone who clearly prefers animals over humans. He ends up as Riley’s mentor for six months in the Isaiah Ranch rehabilitation program for ex-felons—while secretly working undercover to complete research for his PhD.
Cue forced proximity… and Riley’s undeniable charm, which Max doesn’t stand a chance against.
Their slow-burn romance unfolds deliciously and naturally, driven by character development rather than spice. The spice level is very moderate and never takes center stage—it simply complements the story, which I really appreciated. This book is first and foremost about two men slowly finding their way into each other’s hearts.
Once again, I loved Romeo Alexander’s writing style. The profound inner monologues—especially Riley’s—were such a joy to read and added so much emotional depth.
One small critique, though—and this was also something I felt with the first book: I really wish we had gotten a few chapters showing their relationship after it fully unfolded, instead of jumping so quickly from that point straight into the epilogue and the future. I just wanted a little more time with them as a couple.
I listened to the audiobook, narrated by Michael Dean, who did an excellent job portraying these two polar-opposite MMCs. I especially loved his softer tone and performance for Riley—it fit his character perfectly and elevated the entire experience.
