It's Kipling. So of course, there are heroes. And fighting. But the book also shows a beautiful love for the English countryside and its rich (of course idealized) history, where most men are heroes and all women are chaste, beautiful (but in their way, pretty admirable in their own right). I listened to most of it paddling on my SUP along a (German) river and it was a glorious fit. The reading voice is very fitting, too.
