Isak Dineson takes up the absorbing story of her life in Kenya begun in the unforgettable Out of Africa, which she published under the name of Karen Blixon. With warmth and humanity, these four stories illuminate her love for the African people, their dignity and traditions, and the beauty and wildness of the landscape. The first three were written in the 1950s and the last, "Echoes from the Hills", was written especially for this volume in the summer of 1960, when the author was in her 70s. In all they provide a moving final chapter to her African reminiscences.

Was für ein Fest für die Ohren! Ich habe Sehnsucht nach dem Land, das ich riechen, hören und vor mir sehen konnte, obwohl ich noch nie dort war, und obwohl es (zumindest so nicht mehr) existiert. Eine leise Wehmut, eine Ahnung von Abschied zieht sich durch das Buch von der ersten Seite an, und bleibt doch immer positiv und mutig. Eine Baronin Blixen jammert nicht, sie berichtet, erzählt, oft sehr persönlich und doch immer mit einer gewissen Kühle und Distanz. Elegantes und doch einfaches Englisch, hervorragend gelesen, sodass man das Gefühl hat, der Autorin selbst zuhören. Nie "gefühlsduselig" oder kitschig, manchmal kritisch, meistens sehr liebevoll, respektvoll und immer interessant, Ich habe das Buch sehr genossen, und werde es sicher noch mehrfach hören, even if it leaves me feeling somehow bereft and melancholic. A classic.

The narrator's superb performance almost. makes me believe I'm hearing the book read by the author herself. One of the most elegantly descriptive, beautifully written books of our time.

Enthralling account of a lost world. A mixture of almost anthropological descriptions of the various tribes and personalities of Kenya at the beginning of the 20th century and a personal, in many respects tragic life. Amazing performance by the reader Susan Lyons , read at the right pass with a beautiful tone of voice. One imagines it could be Karen Blixen herself. One of the best books of the 20th century. I am sure I will come back to this reading again and again!
