Review on 'Men of Smithfield - Max and Finn`
The 'Men of Smithfield' stories are on my regular re-listening list whenever I want a fluently written audio book with a great voice actor to make me feel good and smile after a stressy day.
Michael Finnegan = Finn is a dedicated teacher at a posh prep school tugged away into the forest area close to town. When a famous Hollywood actor is stalked by a crazy fan, he orders tight security for his son. So Max Douglas of Smithfield's security buissness and ex-SEAL personally sees to this job. But meeting Michael/Finn again proves to be almost too much temptation to resist. Distraction is a dangerous thing when all of a sudden weird things happen at the dorms and on campus, escalating fast to a lip biting end!
This is clearly my most favourite of all the 'Men of Smithfield' stories for many reasons. First I love the fall setting at the boarding school including the school musical production and the Halloween party. Secondly Max&Finn are both hard working, dedicated men with a deep sense of responsibility, and I personally like the soldier /creative pairing. L.B.Gregg has written their story like in one molde, well structured, nicely flowing and with a decent crime story part, making everyone search and guess about the culprit until the end.I must admit I had been more intrigued by Max and Finn's relationship development than by the mystery at first. Starting chapters with emails was a fun and informative way to hint what to expect next.
Again Shannon Gunn has done a marvellous job bringing this fast paced, funny, hot and mysterious story „alive“. His portray of Michael's inner and outspoken dialogues is perfect as is his dry humor. Juggling between his attraction for Max and being the busy teacher bringing a school musical on stage while dealing with lively adolesents, is not easy. Mr Gunn has vividly portayed the moody bunch of teenagers.And I am pretty sure he had a lot of fun reading the Halloween Party scene with Finn's hilarious costume choice.
