I stuck with it till chapter 10 but had to give up at some point because of a mixture of disgust (misogynistic, violent) and confusion (rambling, story in a story).
It could be that the book was so firmly rooted in its time (1980s) that it felt dated, pretentious and wrong reading it now? Or was it never a good book in the first place?
On a positive note: the narrator was excellent and managed to bridge the extremes of London criminal slang, upper class gent, mysterious femme fatale and brash NY writer.
