So.... a Scooby-Doo-like gang finds themselves suddenly all grownup with all the grownup problems, gets a last mystery to solve and the protagonist gets eleanored by a house that has read too much Shirley Jackson. Put like that it should be my cup of tea, but it just wasn't. Saw the "twists" coming from a mile away, had not a single fright and wasn't invested in the characters at all. And of course maybe that's just me. Anyway, the narration was great!

The narration is captivating and the plot moves forward quickly. It’s compelling to listen to this short audiobook in one sitting. The writing was excellent. However, the characters are unlikeable and devoid of personality (except for Kevin). The story is so rushed that it offers no opportunity to grow attached to the characters.

The story starts in an intriguing way but seems to become increasingly more scattered, rushed and predictable. It loses steam. Considering the excellent narration and writing, it deserves a listen.

I was constantly surprised by this story; from the detailed characters, to the gentle sapphic nods, to the brisk pace. It wastes no time in getting the story established and, like all good Lovecraftian horrors, there's no villain or murderous creature, just something old and unfathomable.

If anything, I wish the story had been longer, hence the name of the review. It feels a little like reading the epilogue of a YA series as they struggle to grow out of their teenage setting. All the characters have goals for the future and memories of their past together so it would have been nice to explore those a little more.
In any case, I would definitely recommend this to anyone who wants a bit of modern sensibilities injected into a classic horror story or perhaps someone who fancies a more unsettling, gothic kind of horror than a lot of authors can manage.
