From Wall Street Journal and USA Today bestselling author Emma Slate comes the first book in the Saddles & Spurs series.
I flee to my family's mountain ranch to heal a broken heart.
I did not expect a charging bear.
But then a shirtless, tattooed cowboy saves me.
Declan Brewer is my father's new ranch hand.
He's a retired rodeo star who's got swagger in spades.
And he's completely forbidden.
Declan is new to Huckleberry Hill, but the small town welcomes him as one of their own.
Then one night after bourbon and banter, we cross the line.
Now we're sneaking around, in hopes my father doesn't find out.
Declan makes me feel safe, even when I'm on the back of his motorcycle.
He's everything I've ever wanted.
But I'm scared he'll abandon me when he finds out I can't have children.
Just like my ex.
And then the impossible happens:
I'm pregnant with a cowboy's baby.

Declan is the kind of MMC I love as a reset—all green flags. He’s hot, rugged, a shameless flirt, rides horses and motorcycles (yes please), and the way he calls Hadley “bear snack”? Adorable. Absolutely melted.
Hadley is a very likable FMC—young, but mature for her age. I really appreciated that the drama surrounding her ex didn’t overshadow her banter and connection with Declan. No unnecessary excuses, no dragged-out misunderstandings—she actually allows herself to explore what’s building between them, which was refreshing.
The spice was steamy, just the right amount for a cozy cowboy romance. That said, while the fertility issue played a very present and important role in the story, the reason behind it was never revealed, which felt a bit odd and unfinished to me.
One small personal gripe: I really would’ve loved chapters from Declan’s POV. Not getting that was a bit of a bummer. However, the duet narration definitely made up for it.
Vanessa Moyen’s voice is so warm and feminine—she was excellent as Hadley and brought a lovely emotional softness to the story. Sean Masters is always a treat, but it was especially nice to hear him in a narration that leaned more towards light and bright than intense or dark.
Overall, Huckleberry Hill was a heartwarming, cute, easy read—the perfect palate cleanser after heavier books.
