Über diesen Titel

Richard Griffiths invites the listener to look closer at the history and the underlying reasons behind the main developments of European integration. He passionately presents a history that is richer and intellectually more satisfying than much of the elegiac literature on the European union that passes for history. A solid and humorous account on the making of the union.

Content:
  • Chapter 1: The First Supranational Community: The European Coal and Steel Community,
  • Chapter 2: A Missed Chance: The European Defence Community,
  • Chapter 3: The Creation of the European Economic Community: The Rome Treaties,
  • Chapter 4: Reactive Nationalism? De Gaulle and Europe,
  • Chapter 5: Reactive Nationalism? The British Membership Problem,
  • Chapter 6: 1992. The Completion of the Internal Market,
  • Chapter 7: The European union. Economic and Monetary union,
  • Chapter 8: A Family of Twenty-five. EU Enlargement.

These lectures offer an exhaustive and thus useful history of the EU, But with it's common interruption and restarts it can be often somewhat strange in argumentation.

With recent views as the EU as a union centered on Germany it is interesting to hear how this French-started project, under influence of the US, was mediated by the Netherlands, reshaped by countries like Britain and Spain and was in short... complicated.

Griffith ends the lecture talking about the possible integration of Turkey as a bold opportunity for Europe to help shape a country that is often seen as problematic. Though I don't fully agree, the history of the EU provides lessons about if or how such a step should be undertaken.

Overall I recommend this lecture.

Deep but Confusing

The speaker makes several errors correcting himself throughout (this is quite evident at thr beginning of chapter 7 in which he confuses dates). I expected a neutral factious based history of the EU and do not feel this was provided.

Opinioneted lecture leaning slightly left!
