Sensual story with music

I loved the voice of Dan Stevens in The Shadow of the Wind so experimented with this unknown book. The narrator was brilliant and I loved the music that was interspersed into the reading - it matched the sensuality of the story. I enjoyed hearing about the gilded life of the rich in turn of the century Holland, and Piet who joins the vermeulen-sickerts family as a tutor to their troubled son. His aim is to enjoy life and he takes what he can, even starting a passionate affair with the mistress of the house. The story is quite predictable but still fun and the listening experience is sublime. My main niggle was that Piet was too perfect and seemed to get away with everything.

deeply enjoyable musing on the nature of pleasure

A very easy read that still leaves some material to digest. Beautiful descriptions, highly recommended.

Beautiful Belle Epoque tale of plenty

One might think enough stories of young men without means entering and turning upside down a rich family's life have been told, but this lively tale with many loveable, heartbreakingly human and flawed characters is simply a pleasure to listen to. I love how sweet classical music is added as a background when it is mentioned in the story! Dan Stevens' warm voice seems to be made for this light and entertaining tale, full of cheeky audacity, erotic adventures and human desires and dreams.
