Über diesen Titel

Random House presents the audiobook edition of Gardens Of The Moon: (Malazan Book Of The Fallen 1) by Steven Erikson, read by Ralph Lister.

Bled dry by interminable warfare, infighting and bloody confrontations with Lord Anomander Rake and his Tiste Andii, the vast, sprawling Malazan empire simmers with discontent.
Even its imperial legions yearn for some respite. For Sergeant Whiskeyjack and his Bridgeburners and for Tattersail, sole surviving sorceress of the Second Legion, the aftermath of the siege of Pale should have been a time to mourn the dead. But Darujhistan, last of the Free Cities of Genabackis, still holds out - and Empress Lasseen's ambition knows no bounds.
However, it seems the empire is not alone in this great game. Sinister forces gather as the gods themselves prepare to play their hand...

Conceived and written on an epic scale, Gardens of the Moon is a breathtaking achievement - a novel in which grand design, a dark and complex mythology, wild and wayward magic and a host of enduring characters combine with thrilling, powerful storytelling to resounding effect. Acclaimed by writers, critics and readers alike, here is the opening chapter in what has been hailed a landmark of epic fantasy: the awesome 'The Malazan Book of the Fallen'.

Kritikerstimmen

Erikson is an extrodinary writer...treat yourself to Gardens of the Moon (STEPHEN R. DONALDSON)
Complex, challenging...Erikson's strengths are his grown-up characters and his ability to create a world every bit as intricate and messy as our own (J.V. JONES)
There's nothing safe about fantasy like this: intriguing, complex, thought provoking, exceedingly well-written, and, for the intelligent reader, exhilaratingly satisfying (PAULA GURAN)

Most of the writers deliver a work that is heavily tilted towards the common reader liking. They write a book that they hope people will enjoy. Erikson writes in the way HE enjoys his book to be written. The quality is undeniable. Every tapestry is carefully woven to the last detail, handled with love and religious respect for the material. This ends up being a piece of work targeting a very specific audience and not the majority. But this specific audience will have an unforgettable experience. A series for the ages, an instant classic, worth multiple upon multiple reads. And this being a long series, seldom does one find such quality as well as quantity in one product or work of art.
The voice actor is pretty good and generally delivers, with only very few mishaps here and there that don't draw from the experience.

Heavy read (hearing). Not for everyone

An amazing story, though very complex and requires a lot of concentration or a few reads to catch everything. Nuanced passages that are written very carefully, so as to express precisely what the author intends.

The reading performance is very good. A few small things here or there, but excellent character portrayal, though I imagined Kalam to sound different for a big, muscular man. Certain choices in emphasising words or parts of sentences, I believe, would have been different, had the narrator read the series a few times through, but that's the beauty of this book. Give him another go at it, and it would almost be an entirely different audiobook.

Well worth multiple listens

Steven Erikson’s Malazan Book of the Fallen is arguably among the greatest epic fantasy series in the world. It’s up there with ASOIAF and the Cosmere. It’s also not an easy series to read, let alone listen to, in terms of the complexity and nature of its content and its prose. So why, oh, why didn’t anybody consider that it would be prudent to hire a reader, who can do more than four voices for this tome of a novel with probably over a hundred characters? Why does Amanas sound like THAT? Why does Tattersail sound like a precocious teenager? Also some of the choices in here literally don’t make any sense in context, it’s like he’s reading the novel for the first time as he’s being recorded. And sometimes he just keeps using the same weird unfitting cadence over an over during dialogue scenes, which makes it incredibly difficult to follow in places, because it becomes incredibly monotone. I really don’t want to sh!t all over this guy, I’m sure he isn’t incompetent, he’s just not suited to reading this kind of book at all. But fact is still that this performance pulled this, again, all-time classic fantasy novel down from a 5/5 to a 3/5 experience. If this were any pretty much other book, this might be fine, but this is freaking Malazan, people. Do better.

Amazing book, terrible narrator
