Several years have past since the war-weary mercenary Hadrian and cynical ex-assassin Royce joined forces to start their thieves-for-hire organization better known as Riyria. Things have gone well enough for the team as they do "jobs" for various nobles throughout Elan. Usually, that means stealing something, but when a young heiress asks them to steal her…well, that's a first for the pair. All is not as it seems, but Royce is determined to get the bottom of what's actually going on. After all, he has his professional integrity at stake.

Originally released in the Blackguards anthology published by Ragnarok Publications, this is a standalone short story of 10,800 words. No prior knowledge of The Riyria Revelations or The Riyria Chronicles is required to enjoy it to its fullest, making this a perfect introduction for new readers or a chance for existing fans to spend a little more time with old friends.

Leider sind die Stimmen der zwei Hauptpersonen schwer von einander zu unterscheiden. Ansonsten gefallen mir die Geschichten der beiden immer.

Michael J. Sullivan’s “Professional Integrity” is a free download and since I did not read any of the Riyria Chronicles, I have to judge the story on its stand-alone value. Loyal Riyria readers have the benefit of meeting old friends and might get a lot more out of this small narrative.

The story is nicely written and I enjoyed the banter of the 2 protagonists, nothing outstanding, but entertaining enough. The storyline is a little bit construed and not very logical, but phantasy readers are used to that. To me the two protagonists, Royce and Hadrian, appeared to be medieval copies of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. Royce regardless of his grumpiness and cynicism is the deep thinker, who has everything figured out already, while Hadrian jumps to conclusions and has a weakness for damsels in distress.

The two ex-mercenaries get through life by thieving and contract work for nobles, but to their astonishment, they are asked by a charming young woman to kidnap her. In spite of Royce’s misgivings they take the job and are drawn into an adventure with werewolves, false priests and noblemen and mischievous servants.

All in all a nice tale, especially since it is for free.

Sherlock Holmes and Watson in Riyria

Die Story ist kurzweilig und in sich geschlossen, obwohl die Charaktere aus einer größeren Buchreihe bekannt sind. Die beiden Protagonisten sind interessant und humorvoll. Der Sprecher spricht ein gut verständliches Englisch, ist jedoch nicht sehr variabel in seiner Betonung.

Lustige Story mit charmanten Charakteren

Wem Riyria gefällt wird auch diese abwechslungsreiche Kurzgeschichte lieben. Sie ist kurzweilig, spannend, und steckt voller unerwartete Wendungen.
Roice trockene Art ist wie immer köstlich und wieder gewinnt man den Eindruck, dass sich unter der harten Schale ein zumindest etwas weicherer Kern verbirgt, der sich als professional integrity nach außen hin zeigt.
Zwar liebe ich wie David Nathan die deutsche Übersetzung interpretiert, aber auch der englische Sprecher holt sehr viel aus den Charakteren heraus.
