Emma is a literary classic by Jane Austen following the genteel women of Georgian-Regency England in their most cherished sport: matchmaking. Emma is spoiled, headstrong, and self-satisfied. After a couple she has introduced gets married, she greatly overestimates her own matchmaking abilities and, blind to the dangers of meddling in other people's lives, proceeds to forge ahead in her new interest despite objections. What follows is a comedy of manners, in which Emma repeatedly counsels her friends for or against their marriage prospects, absent any notice of their true emotions or desires. This story is often cited as a personal favorite of critics and literary historians, and Emma is set apart from other Austen heroines by her seeming immunity to romantic attraction.

Ich habe mir extra die Hörproben von vier unterschiedlichen Sprecherinnen angehört und mich dann für diese entschieden. Ihre Stimme ist, wenn sie erzählt, sehr angenehm. Leider kam in der Hörprobe noch kein Dialog vor. Da verstellt die Sprecherin nämlich ihre Stimme und gerade wenn sie ältere Menschen spricht oder Männer mit rauhem Unterton, versteht man sie nicht mehr so gut. Da ich hauptsächlich beim Autofahren Audible höre, ist das besonders ärgerlich, da ich dann nicht dauernd zurückspulen kann. Sobald der Dialog vorbei ist, ist auch wieder alles verständlich gesprochen. Audible lässt mich das Hörbuch leider nicht gegen ein anders umtauschen. Außerdem gehen da die Hörproben auch nicht bis zum ersten Dialog.

The reader is brilliant and the voices she makes are very proper and well done.

The story takes a while to engross the reader, but when it does, it's a delightful story.

As with most audio books, I miss the information on the edition and text used. I really wish Audible would make these available. Especially when dealing with such old texts, it's important to know when it was edited last and by whom, as well as the publication information.

All in all, a good book and certainly worth listening to.
