What Marlow found on the way up was not a station but a ruin of one, not men working but men waiting to die, and a forest that watched him without interest. What he found at the end of the river was a man who had looked into the dark and decided he liked what he saw.
Conrad's 1899 novella is the shortest great book about the worst thing people do when nobody is watching, and it is told by a man who will not explain it to you, because he cannot. Every sentence is doing work, and the river keeps going.
This unabridged recording keeps Conrad's frame narration intact: the deck of the Nellie, the anonymous listener, and Marlow's voice carrying the whole length of the story in one long unbroken dusk.
