With all of the pluck and charm of its eponymous young hero, Rachel McAdams (The Notebook, Spotlight, Midnight in Paris) delivers a spectacular reading of Montgomery's beloved bildungsroman. In moments both funny and bittersweet, McAdams' voice is imbued with the spark that has made Anne a much-loved symbol of individualism and cheer for over a century. In this story of "kindred spirits", McAdams' touching and heartfelt narration proves she is just that - bonded on a deep level to this shimmering classic.

When aging brother and sister Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert decide to adopt an orphan boy to help with chores around their farm, Green Gables on Prince Edward Island, neither is prepared for the feisty and imaginative redheaded girl who is mistakenly brought to them instead. Nor are they prepared for the way in which she will change their lives. Through a series of hilarious misadventures, Anne's uncompromising spirit makes her a striking presence in the close-knit village, bringing new friendships, first crushes, and, for her foster parents, a love and openness unimaginable before her arrival.

I love the book, it's one of my all-time favourites and there's not much to say about the story here as it's so well known. But I would like to express my admiration for the charming narration by Canadian actress Rachel McAdams. She reads the book so splendidly that it's a delight to listen to. She captures the characters' idiosyncrasies and their overall personalities so well, without overdoing it at any point that I was simply enraptured even though I know the book almost by heart.
I hope Audible hires Rachel McAdams to perform the other novels in the "Anne"-series as well!!!

Simply perfect!

Since Lucy Maud Montgomery’s “Anne of green gables” is one of the most popular children books, especially in North America and Japan, I thought, I have to read it, it might be something I could read to my grandchildren. OK, I admit, this idea vanished into thin air very quickly. This is not a Canadian version of Pippi Longstocking, quite the opposite. While Pippi Longstocking is the child every other child would like to be, Anne of green gables is the child all adults would like to have. Of course Lucy Maud Montgomery’s "Anne of green gables" has been written more than a century ago and that explains a lot. Regardless of all that, it is a charming novel and we easily get caught by its magic.

The protagonist of the story is Anne Shirley. She is an eleven year old orphan girl and by mistake she is sent to Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert, who actually expected a young boy to help them with the farm work. While Marilla has her doubts initially, they decide to keep the girl. Anne is a gawkish, red haired girl, who continuously gets into trouble, because she has a lot of fantasy and loves to daydream. But quickly enough she is well liked by most, because of her kindness and good spirit. Most important of all, she is talented and ambitious and her foster parents grow very fond and proud of her.

All in all a pleasant read, but perhaps not for everyone. Especially children might find it a little bit outdated and boring.
