Liebe die Serie, hab sie seit 29 Jahren nicht mehr gelesen, jetzt fürs pendeln als Hörbuch.
Fand den Singsang des Sprechers erstmal gewöhnungsbedürftig, aber hab mich dann dran gewöhnt und die Charaktere bringt er super zum Leben...

Great book, but the audio recording is not done well. the narrators voice is not very clear so I needed to turn up the volume a lot compared to other Titels. I did get used to his style of reading after some hours.

This one's a bit of a slow burner, which I mean in all the best ways. Characters (and places!) gradually gather more depth and richness as the story goes on, and what becomes of every single one in the end is something you as a reader will care about more than you'll be happy to admit. The realm may be fictional, but the society described is reminiscent of early medieval Europe, both on a political and technological level, and the characters are so well fleshed out there is little danger of feeling alienated. Their names alone are a masterstroke, always simple and often infused with a meaning that immediately invokes an image, one that is memorable and helps your orientation as you read. This is a welcome change to other fantasy names that are often made-up words and therefore less accessible (though there are a couple of those, too, in Assassin's Apprentice).
One word on Paul Boehmer as narrator: It's true that his style of reading takes some getting used to. But I enjoy his reading pace, for me it mirrors and helps along the "slow burning" effect of the plot itself. The story unfolds in all its richness and I find myself invested. Job done. On to book two!

Good start - curious for more

Ich schreibe hier, beim ersten Band, obwohl ich die Farseer Trilogie schon durch habe. Immerhin geht es ja um die Frage, ob man überhaupt damit anfangen sollte.
Erst mal zu Paul Boehmer, dem Sprecher. Ich habe von einigen Rezensenten gelesen, sie kämen mit seiner Art zu lesen nicht klar. Ich hab mir den kurzen Testausschnitt angehört und fand das tatsächlich ein bisschen pomadig, überartikuliert und dramatisch in der Betonung. Dann hab ich danach gesucht, was er sonst noch so vorgelesen hat und festgestellt, dass ich mit ihm schon die komplette Night Angel Trilogie von Brent Weeks gehört hatte. Die liebe ich und ich konnte mich nicht daran erinnern, dass mir Boehmer irgendwie lästig war. Eher hab ich ihn hinterher vermisst.
Man kann höchstens bemängeln, dass zu Beginn die Produktionsqualität eher durchwachsen ist. Damit meine ich, die Lautstärke fällt oft plötzlich ab, als ob sich der Sprecher vom Mikrofon wegdreht. Das gibt sich aber schnell – zwei, drei Kapitel, dann ist das vorbei. Spätestens dann hat man sich auch prima an den anfangs vielleicht eigenwilligen Vortrag gewöhnt. Vielleicht nimmt sich Boehmer auch zurück, das kann ich nicht genau sagen. Es fühlt sich an, als wäre er genau der richtige für dieses Buch. Wenn man vorher Michael Kramer oder Tim Gerald Reynolds gehört hat, ist das schon erstmal eine Umstellung. Lasst euch drauf ein, das isses wert.

Zur Geschichte – alle drei Bücher: Sehr fesselnd, wunderbar geschrieben, schöne Sprache und tolle, ausführlich gezeichnete Charaktere. Ich habe mich dabei ertappt, öfter und länger mit den Hunden draußen zu sein, als nötig war, um in der Geschichte weiter zu kommen. Ich habe tasächlich meinen ganzen Tag immer auch um die Möglichkeit herum geplant, von Fitz, der Hauptfigur, zu hören.

Auch, dass Robin Hobb hier so wahnsinnig umfassend geschrieben hat, finde ich toll. Es gibt zwei folgende Trilogien rund um die Protagonisten der Farseerreihe. Zusätzlich noch jede Menge andere Geschichten aus dem gleichen Dunstkreis... ich freu mich also auf ganz viel weiteren Hör- und Lesespaß von Robin Hobb.

Somewhat uninspired but solid and mostly engaging low fantasy coming of age story of a royal bastard growing up to become a telepathically gifted, socially downtrodden king's assassin, professionally, flawlessly narrated.

Not especially memorable, but thoroughly enjoyable!
