I really enjoyed Eric H. Cline's lecture about ancient Troia due to it's neat research, as well as the clean rhetorical approach to this topic.

The author initially outlines Homer's Iliad in a short manner, also bringing it into focus that Homer isn't the only one, who shaped the narrative of the Troian War. In fact, he includes other greek sources from the Epic Cycle.

More over, he also includes Hethitic Sources. So this lecture does not focus on archaeology alone , but on literary sources, too. He does so in an clean and well-researched manner.

After introducing the literary spectrum, Eric H. Cline shifts his view to the archaeology of Troia. He discribes the various phases of the city's development, also summarising the most logical candidates for being Homer's Troy.

In a short outlook he compares the mythogical aspect of the Troian war, with the real evidence in the city's archaeology, coming to the conclusion that this war was a struggle for economic superiority, ending in decades of warfare.

In the end I have to say, that this lecture is worth to listen to. It is mostly made for an older audience, interested in Greek and Hetite sources describing the war. Additionally it dives deep into the settlement history of troy. So if one really likes details, this audio book is worth to consider.

Great lecture about Troia and ongoing research

Dies Hörbuch hält mehr als es verspricht: Man erfährt nicht nur alles Wissenswerte über Troja auf dem neusten Stand der Forschung, sondern bekommt darüber hinaus Einblicke in die Kulturen des östlichen Mittelmeers im 2. und 1. Jahrtausend v. Chr. Ausserdem wird die Forschungsgeschichte bis zur Gegenwart erklärt - bis hin zu internationalen Gerichtsverhandlungen, wem eigentlich der sogenannte Schatz des Priamos gehört.
Argumente für und gegen verschiedene Forschungsmeinungen werden ausführlich dargelegt und die Möglichkeit gegeben, sich eine eigene Meinung zu bilden. Das alles wird an keiner Stelle trocken oder langweilig, neben Stoff zum Nachdenken bietet die Vorlesung auch Geschichten zum Schmunzeln.
Wer gut Englisch kann (Prof. Cline spricht immer klar und langsam) und sich für die Antike interessiert, wird dies Hörbuch sicher genießen.
