I've never heard of the author before but liked the description anyways, and being quarantined for so long already I desperately needed new listening material. So the book it set over a 10 day time period and unravels non-stop,so I had a hard time to press pause so not to listen to all of it at once. There is quick but not predictable character development and the atmosphere of the maybe 1920s New Orleans with gangs, muddy gangster kids, casinos, and a little magic is a nice setting. Saskia Maarleveld did a good job too narrating both the female and male protagonists. I purchased the second part right away ( King of Fools), but it was a bit of a let-down after all the excitement of the first part.
