Über diesen Titel

In 1933, at the age of 18, Patrick Leigh Fermor set out on an extraordinary journey by foot - from the Hook of Holland to Constantinople. A Time of Gifts is the first volume in a trilogy recounting the trip, and takes the listener with him as far as Hungary.

It is a book of compelling glimpses - not only of the events that were curdling Europe at that time, but also of its resplendent domes and monasteries, its great rivers, the sun on the Bavarian snow, the storks and frogs, the hospitable burgomasters who welcomed him, and that world's grandeurs and courtesies. His powers of recollection have astonishing sweep and verve, and the scope is majestic.

Kritikerstimmen

"Nothing short of a masterpiece" (Jan Morris)
"Not only is the journey one of physical adventure but of cultural awakening. Architecture, art, genealogy, quirks of history and language are all devoured - and here passed on - with a gusto uniquely his" (Colin Thubron, Sunday Telegraph)
"Rightly considered to be among the most beautiful travel books in the language" ( Independent)

A great and utterly optimistic story. The narrator maybe too emotional at times, but overall quite good.

an inspiring travel

in 1933, the author started his long journey from the Hoek of Holland to Constantinople, staying in turns in cowsheds, inns, your hostels, manors and castles, meeting interesting people all the way and recording both his findings and the conversations with people along the way. This book - part 1 of a Trilogy - covers his travels from the Netherlands though Germany and Austria, the Czech Republic and down to Slovenia. What a find! I learned a lot about people's attitudes towards the NAZIS at that time, ancient history of the regions the author travelled through, what the landscape looked like 90 years ago, how people cared about environmental protection even then. Crispin Redman has some problems pronouncing non-English words, but is a really good reader otherwise. What an exciting book to listen to!

incredible mix of history, geography, philosophy

I found the story really interesting. Alas, or should I say: to my utter annoyance, the reader ruined it completely. First of all, he seems to be too much in love with his own voice as he lingers on almost every sillable. Worst of all, and here I have to say that I’m a native speaker of German, is his pronunciation of German words. Most of the time I had no idea what towns or places he was talking about and when he spoke whole sentences I was also left clueless. I would like to ask the reader how he prepared for the task or if he harbors any personal issues with the German language. Sometimes, while he was sputtering out those vowels and consonants, I wondered if he was disgusted by the German language and I began to feel offended. It is, of course also possible, that he is devoid of any talent where languages other than his own are concerned. Either way, he should not have taken on the job.

Reader ruins it all

This brilliant travel classic contains quite a lot of dialogue in German. One would therefore be excused to think that the publisher would choose a speaker with at least a basic knowledge of that language and it’s pronunciation. But alas not so. The speaker mangles all the German dialogues, turning all the German characters indiscriminately into inarticulate and unintelligible drunkards. No such gross incompetence would be tolerated in print or in film adaptations. How can this be accepted for an audiobook?

Terrible choice of speaker
