Über diesen Titel
In a world where magic is a science, Siobhan Naught is a genius.
But even geniuses need schooling.
Siobhan has just been banned from the country's only magical university. As the unwitting accomplice to the theft of a priceless magical artifact, she has suddenly become a wanted criminal. There are fates worse than death, and if caught, she will face them. Unwilling to give up on her dream of becoming the world's most powerful sorcerer, she resolves to do whatever it takes to change her fate.
Even if it means magically disguising herself as a boy and indebting herself to a gang of criminals to pay for university tuition.
With the coppers after her, the pressure of trying to keep her spot in the devilishly competitive magic classes, and the gang calling in favors to repay her debts, Siobhan will need every drop of magic she can channel.

# The magic system
The magic system of the novel can be classified as a hard magic system. Rules exist and are not broken or mistreated in the novel.
I find myself speculating what could be possible and what the protagonist could've done differently. Immersion; exactly what I love about hard magic systems. This is an excellent example of, I daresay, one of the most fun hard magic systems ever.
# World building
At a glance, the world of A Practical Guide To Sorcery appears to be a classical high fantasy world, nothing special, but there could be portal/multiverse lore in the future. The setting of the novel is good, but also not the focus of the novel.
I personally love crazy worldbuilding such as in Thundamoo's Vigor Mortis, and would love to see more interesting ideas in fantasy novels. After all, it's fantasy, and not just limited to medieval Tolkien settings.
# Writing
The grammar in the novel is splendid modern English. The reader can easily understand the wording. The wording is plain where needed, but otherwise describes in detail, but without fancy words.
I personally love intriguing rhetoric and fun syntax, maybe even a few paragraphs with a meter, or a character that speaks in rhymes. A Practical Guide To Sorcery is very plain in that regard.
# Characters
Well, I can't really talk about the characters without spoiling a good part of the story, so I will be brief.
It is very hard to characterize a protagonist as intriguing as Siobhan without falling for the gender debate and similar pitfalls. But the novel characterizes her incredibly well as a strong lead, without romance/sexuality nonsense that so often attaches itself, as if by magic.
Side characters are characterized in broad strokes, enough for the reader to fill the blanks, but always proportional to the "screentime" of the character, as it should be.
# Summarium
A Practical Guide To Sorcery is a must-read for high fantasy readers, loving hard magic systems without the crutch of a LitRPG system.
HIGH FANTASY IN AN IMPRESSIVELY THOUGHT-OUT WORLD

there is just too much inner monologue with self reflection and not enough story. while its nice in the beginning to get to know the characters it gets boring very fast and multiple times i thought "yeah yeah i know, you alredy reflected about something like this 6 times.. now do something already". i think you can skip whole chapters without missing much and thats always a bad sign
the magic system is weird with weird components like in those children books: a magic circle with the eye of a bat, three frog legs and the tears of a virgin to cast a curse of whatever but the descriptions are well formed and logical
overall the story is not bad and written in way that i want to know more despite its shortcommings. sometimes i felt bored but always wanted to know more. i will propably buy the second one
boring monologues and weird magic
