Dr. Stephen Peters

Dr. Stephen Peters, MS, Psy.D., ABN, is a neuroscientist and board-certified clinical neuropsychologist who translates brain science into practical guidance for horse training and care. He completed his practicum at Abbott Northwestern Hospital, an internship at Danbury Hospital, and a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at Hartford Hospital in the departments of Neurorehabilitation, Neurology, and Neurosurgery. He later served as Chief of Neuropsychological Services in a large neurology practice, where he participated in clinical research trials using rigorous scientific protocols. He also founded and served as Clinical Director of hospital-based Memory and Brain Health clinics.

A lifelong horseman, Dr. Peters now teaches worldwide through Horse Brain Science Clinics, combining classroom learning, equine brain dissections, and live demonstrations to help riders and owners understand equine behavior, learning, and welfare through the nervous system. He is co-author of Evidence-Based Horsemanship (with Martin Black), A Horse’s Life (with Mark Rashid and Crissi McDonald) and author of Horse Brain Science and The Book of Neuropoetry.

Dr. Peters lives at River Rock Ranch in Mancos, Colorado, with his wife, Michelle, a cat, three Australian Shepherds, and six horses.
