New research has uncovered deeply buried military secrets—both the Allied and Axis special operations during WWII included monsters. Did the Soviets use a dragon to win the Battle of Kursk? Did a vampire fight for the Canadians in Holland? Did the US drop the second atomic bomb on a kaiju? This collection takes real events from World War II and injects them with fantastical creatures that mirror the “unreality” of war itself. Each story—and two poems—feature mythical, mystical, and otherwise unexplainable beings that change the course of history.

Kresy w przededniu i w czasie II wojny światowej. Joanna, młoda Ukrainka ucząca polskie, ukraińskie i żydowskie dzieci, ginie, lecz jej opowieść trwa dalej. Jako duch powraca do kluczowych momentów swego życia: rodzinnej wsi, niespełnionej miłości, pracy nauczycielki, wojennej przemocy, aranżowanego małżeństwa oraz narastającej nienawiści między sąsiadami – Polakami i Ukraińcami. Jej narracja łączy historię z poetycką wyobraźnią, a fantazja staje się formą obrony przed okrucieństwem świata i próbą ocalenia pamięci oraz dziecięcej niewinności.

For the people on the rugged Irish island of Winding Gale, life has always been hard. Now in the wake of the second World War, the island is dying, the young taken away by death or the appeal of better lives elsewhere, leaving behind only a handful of adults. But on the night the men of the island disappear while fishing in uncharted waters, the women are forced into a conflict with something both new and unfathomably old. A strange greenish mist rolls in, cutting off the island from the mainland. Spiral symbols appear in the sand, fashioned from dead fish and stones.

Se extiende bajo la superficie y emerge como una planta fantástica, en múltiples sentidos.

When word spreads that three bodies have been found mutilated, Donald offers to help authorities seek the killer. He coaxes Harold into assisting and winds up leading the naive young man and the dutiful Alice into a labyrinth of deceit, madness, and murder. Lingering in the periphery is the shadowy figure of a local legend commonly known as the Slingerman, who some believe is behind the heinous crimes. Harold, who has heard stories of the creature since his cradle days, has his doubts — until the ominous figure begins manifesting itself to him.

Auschwitz, established in 1940, stands as a profound symbol of the Holocaust, representing not only the systematic extermination of millions but also the resilience of the human spirit. Initially conceived as a concentration camp for Polish political prisoners, it expanded rapidly to become a major center for the Nazi regime's genocidal policies. By the time it was liberated in January 1945, over 1.1 million people, primarily Jews, had perished within its walls.

The events which killed dozens of people and put the word "werewolf" on people's lips have been covered up. Deaths blamed on gang warfare, drugs, and costumes. A secret operation is in process to make sure that the truth about what happened in Boxford stays buried. But some things refuse to lie down and be still. There are perpetual loose ends that continue to multiply and carry on a legacy that began well before the Second World War.

The descent into darkness during World War II reveals a chilling yet fascinating facet of human behavior under extreme duress. In the unforgiving landscapes of Singapore and New Guinea, Japanese soldiers engaged in acts of cannibalism that transcended mere survival instincts. This horrific practice was not solely driven by starvation but became a macabre ritual, a twisted means of reinforcing camaraderie among soldiers. The act of consuming the flesh of captured POWs served as a grim assertion of power, a stark statement that they had dominion over life and death.
