In the waning years of the eighteenth century, young William Culpepper leaves behind his quiet family home and steps into the ruthless world of the British Army. Appointed an ensign in the King’s 33rd Regiment of Foot, he soon learns that courage, intellect, and moral conviction are tested in the forge of the battlefield.

Tipu Sultan is dead. Seringapatam has fallen. Mysore has been broken, but victory has opened a dangerous vacuum across southern India. Captain William Culpepper of His Majesty's 33rd Regiment of Foot is sent into the unstable year after Mysore's collapse. At twenty-two, he has already survived brutal campaigning in Europe and India, including the storming of Seringapatam. Now he faces a different kind of war.

A Maratha army marches on Poona. The Peshwa flees his own capital. The Company decides to put him back on his throne, and the road that begins at Seringapatam ends at a fortress thought to be unassailable. Major William Culpepper rides north with Arthur Wellesley, attached to the general's staff for a campaign that will cross half a subcontinent. He serves two purposes. One is line work, the kind of fighting that wins battles and fills graves.
