Nakam tells the story of “the Avengers” (Nokmim), a group of young Holocaust survivors led by poet and resistance fighter Abba Kovner, who undertook a mission of revenge against Germany following the crimes of the Holocaust. Motivated by both the atrocities they had endured and the realization that murderous antisemitic attacks on survivors continued long after the Nazi surrender, these fifty young men and women sought retaliation at a level commensurate with the devastation caused by the Holocaust, making clear to the world that Jewish blood would no longer be shed with impunity.

As the world loses these witnesses of the truths of the Holocaust, second- and third-generation voices are more ...

I spent five years in five concentration camps. All the atrocities I saw haunt me, so I write to process the past. I will never be able to erase from my memory the picture of Birkenau, where one year seemed a thousand years, where thousands of men and women from all parts of the world found an untimely end. Five years seem a short space of time, but more crimes were committed during that period than during the past five centuries.

In this memoir, written at age ninety-five, Fanny recounts her inspirational and emotional story, its historical context, and her observations on the human condition. She narrates her heartbreaking and triumphant memories, her belief in miracles, and the insights and meaning she draws from those experiences. Fanny's mission is to ensure the Holocaust is never forgotten and never repeated. Never again should hate drive human behavior to devalue human life. Never again should the world stand by and observe such atrocities.

But all that changed when the war reached Butla. First, the Russians came and kicked them out of their house. Then, the Nazis came to cart them off. But the Shwartz family resisted. David decided that no matter what, his family would not be taken captive. Instead, he snuck his family out of their village and into Hungary.

Lleida, a Catalonia-based town, has started marking the rocky unforgiving routes taken by the Jews to flee Nazi Europe to neutral Spain. According to Spanish daily Europa Press, Jewish European citizens migrated from France to Spain through the Pyrenees. The fifth route was recently commemorated after four other routes had been discovered and celebrated by Lleida council president Joan Reñé and the Israeli ambassador Alon Bar back in 2014. The routes measure around 151.6 kilometers and are spread over the Spanish provinces of Vall d’Arán, Pallars Sobirà, Alt Urgell, la Cerdanya and l’Alta Ribagorça.

When Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933, approximately 160,000 Jews called Berlin home. By 1943 less than 5,000 remained in the nation's capital, the epicenter of Nazism, and by the end of the war, that number had dwindled to 1,000. All the others had died in air raids, starved to death, committed suicide, or been shipped off to the death camps. In this captivating and harrowing book, Leonard Gross details the real-life stories of a dozen Jewish men and women who spent the final 27 months of World War II underground, hiding in plain sight.
