In the first book of this bestselling mystery series, criminal investigator Larry Macklin is faced with a mutilated corpse that he suspects is tied to the smokey ruins of an old home in his rural North Florida town. The difficulty for Larry is that the arson case is in the hands of an investigator who despises him. On top of all this, Larry must navigate the difficult relationship he has with the sheriff, who is not only his boss but also his father. The case heats up as Larry suspects that the motive for the murder is buried in his father's past.
