Hugo begins with the story of Jean Valjean, a former convict seeking redemption after nineteen years in prison. Pursued relentlessly by Inspector Javert, Valjean’s narrative takes the reader on a poignant journey of poverty, injustice and hope – as seen with the tragic tale of Valjean’s former employee Fantine, her daughter, Cosette, and the idealistic Marius.
