Eva has spent her life as an outsider. Now, she is trapped in a world that sees her as something much worse—a monster. When Eva is dragged into the world of a book, she is met not with the fantasy she always dreamed of, but with chains. Imprisoned on accusations of unleashing terrifying creatures upon the people of Abhaile, she is forced to strike a deal to untangle the truth behind the portals letting them in. As she journeys through its mystical lands, the injustices of this world come to light.

Humans went underground to ‘save themselves’ for over twenty years after causing two Great Catastrophes that nearly ended the world. However, the preternatural entities have survived and thrived, except for suffering breeding issues that stunted the growth of Thunders, Packs, and Covens, among others. Without hope of finding their claimed mates, all could be lost. Michaela is dying. Even as she knows she can’t remain any longer in the cage her government placed her in, fleeing hasn’t stopped the thing cyphering away her life with each mile she travels.

It is not easy being the most supernatural family in England. Nell talks to the dead; Lord Werth is too often to be found out in the churchyard at the dead of night; and the less said about Lord Bedgberry, the better. Only Miss Gussie Werth has missed out on the family curse. She sups on chocolate, not blood; she's blissfully oblivious to specters (except for Great-Aunt Honoria, of course); and she hasn't the smallest inclination to turn into a beast upon the full moon and go ravening about the countryside.
