The Parliament of Erl tells their king that they want a more magical king for the future. They believe magic will bring fame to their beloved, but unknown, little village. Honoring their request, the king sends his son to Elfland to seek as his bride the King of Elfland's Daughter. The story travels from Erl to Elfland and back again meeting along the way magical creatures and enchanted lands as well as landscapes among the fields we know. The story unfolds as the magical and mundane worlds fail to mix quite as easily as the Parliament of Erl had planned.

Prince Kajik of Frorheim has known all his life that he was a mistake. The second, unwanted son of a cold and calculating king, Kay's birth was accompanied by a dire prophecy - that he would bring about the return of the dreaded sorcerer Athan and therefore cause his kingdom's destruction. When Kay falls in love with the intended bride of his beloved brother Olyn, his father finally has cause to be rid of him. Banishing Kay from their home upon pain of death, the king proclaims that Princess Arynne will marry Olyn and unite the kingdom against Athan.

As the people of Azela morn the loss of another king, the heirs of the ten kingdoms are thrust into the harsh light of leadership without warning. They must now unify their nations and their forces to drive the mysterious conquerors out of their land. Several of the young rulers are already at war or enslaved as they take over, requiring a devious plan to escape.
