"The life of a wild animal always has a tragic end," as Ernest Thompson Seton said. This is the story of Metitsi Wahb, born a playful cub, orphaned young by the murder of his mother, his brothers and sister, raising himself surrounded by enemies, and growing to the fiercest creature anywhere in his vast range -- though showing himself a gentleman in the Yellowstone National Park. And finally, he is laid low by a smaller, more cunning enemy, and defeated in the end by age and injury. "The life of a wild animal always has a tragic end." I'll warn you this is a gentle and yet violent story, a ...

A hero is an individual of unusual gifts and achievements. Whether it be man or animal, this definition applies; and it is the histories of such that appeal to the imagination and to the hearts of those who hear them.In this volume every one of the stories, though more or less composite, is founded on the actual life of a veritable animal hero. The most composite is the White Reindeer. This story I wrote by Utrovand in Norway during the summer of 1900, while the Reindeer herds grazed in sight on the near uplands. The Lynx is founded on some of my own early experiences in the backwoods. It is ...

Dive into the enchanting world of Wild Animals I Have Known, an 1898 masterpiece by naturalist and storyteller Ernest Thompson Seton. As a pioneer of realistic wild-animal fiction, Seton captivates readers with his first collection of short stories, quickly becoming a beloved classic. The opening tale, Lobo the King of Currumpaw, draws from Setons own adventures hunting wolves in the southwestern United States, setting a poignant tone for his future works. In these stories, Seton paints animals—especially misunderstood predators—as compassionate and individualistic beings, challenging the ...

I first discovered this captivating book in the fifth grade, and over fifty years later, it still enchants me. Ernest Thompson Seton was not only a passionate advocate for nature and its creatures but also an extraordinary storyteller. I could truly empathize with Wahb, the great grizzly, as he navigated the challenges of avoiding humans while striving to live freely in his natural habitat. Listening to this audiobook promises to be an enriching hour and a half. Summary by Mike Vendetti, Narrator. This show includes AI-generated content.

Wildlife artist Ernest Thompson Seton shares anecdotes of wild animals that he encountered in Yellowstone Park. "I have aimed to show something of the little aspects of the creatures' lives, which are those that the ordinary traveller will see; I go with him indeed, pointing out my friends as they chance to pass, adding a few comments that should make for a better acquaintance on all sides. And I have offered glimpses, wherever possible, of the wild thing in its home, embodying in these chapters the substance of many lectures given under the same title as this book." - Summary by ashleighjane ...

Wahb (meaning White Bear) is an orphaned Grizzly Bear who learns to respect his fears, fight for peace, and trust the healing powers of a stinky hot-spring. The story is aptly titled The Biography of a Grizzly because it is about the life of a Grizzly. Seton writes with a folksy tone that will enlighten children to the gore and war that Grizzly Bears endure. I thought it was fun to learn (through Wahb's story) about their life span, their diet, their ability to survive gunshots and bear-traps. Beautifully written, the author captures each moment in a way that you almost feel as though you're ...

Ernest Thompson Seton's book, "Monarch, the Big Bear of Tallac." Published in 1919, it tells the story of a tiny Grizzly cub who grew to be the Monarch of the Plains -- and the Prisoner of humanity's arrogance. "Kind memory calls the picture up before me now, clear, living clear: I see them as they sat, the one small and slight, the other tall and brawny, leader and led, rough men of the hills. They told me this tale--in broken bits they gave it, a sentence at a time. ... They told of the river at our feet: of its rise, a thread-like rill, afar on Tallac's side, and its growth--a brook, a ...

A BOOK THAT CHANGED AMERICA... Ernest Thompson Seton was an influential naturalist, and a sometime professional hunter and trapper. Much of this book speaks to the contradictions between these roles. In November 2008, both the PBS series, "Nature," and the BBC series, "Natural World," presented episodes called "The Wolf That Changed America," about Seton, focused in particular on the first story in this book: "Lobo, King of the Currumpaw." Their contention was that his experiences in the capture of Lobo made him the outspoken and controversial activist for wildlife preservation he became. From...
