The 15th century Romanian Prince Vlad III Dracula, also known as Vlad the Impaler, is one of the most fascinating personalities of medieval history. Already during his own lifetime, his true story became obscured by a veil of myths. As a result, he has been portrayed both as a bloody tyrant - who degenerated down throughout the centuries into the fictional vampire of the same name created by Bram Stoker at the end of the 19th century - and as a national and Christian hero who bravely fought to defend his native land and all of Europe against the invading Turkish infidels.

Few names cast more terror into the human heart than Dracula. The legendary vampire, created by author Bram Stoker for his 1897 novel of the same name, has inspired countless horror movies, television shows, and other bloodcurdling tales of vampires. Though Dracula may seem to many like a singular creation, Stoker in fact drew inspiration from a real-life man with an even more grotesque taste for blood: Vlad III, Prince of Wallachia or—as he is better known—Vlad the Impaler (Vlad Tepes), a name earned for his favorite way of dispensing with his enemies.

Vlad III, known as Vlad the Impaler was voivode of Wallachia three times. The tales about the burning of the lazy, the poor, and the lame at Vlad's order and the execution of the woman who had made her husband too short a shirt can also be found among the German and Slavic anecdotes. Books describing Vlad's cruel acts were among the first best sellers in the German-speaking territories.

The Hellmouth has swallowed the world leaving me in a perma-state of anxiety, paranoia, and insomnia. I started listening to audiobooks to help keep my mind from spiraling while trying to sleep. I chose books that I'd never read or didn't remember reading. I was very surprised to find that the classics that I thought I knew were different - and much better - than I thought. I wanted to just express my fascination and joy about that one chapter at a time.

This essay resulted from an article written by the author, for a website in the United States. It tells of how four of the greatest British authors of the Gothic period, at one time or another, came to visit or stay in the ancient seaport of Whitby, on England's rugged North Yorkshire Coast. Charles Dickens, Wilkie Collins, Lewis Carroll, and Bram Stoker all came to Whitby and its surrounding area during the 19th century, and received direct, or in some cases and as the author proposes, indirect inspiration for the wonderful works they wrote.
