In the neon metropolis of Neo Elysium, superheroines streak across the sky, villains destroy buildings on random weekdays, and honey reigns as the city’s favorite pizza topping. But for Arthur Ward, none of it matters. Until the night he becomes collateral damage in a clash between the rookie hero Solaris and the mad genius Doctor Bellreve. Broken, blinded, and drenched in a volatile chemical, Arthur should be dead. Instead, the chemical rewrites the laws of biology… and forces him to evolve. He becomes the impossible: the first male Empowered.

Panopolis is a rough place to be an average Joe. I came here looking for adventure and excitement, but nobody cares about one more normal guy in a city filled with super-powered heroes. The closest I've come to glory is working in a bank that villains often rob. But then I maybe accidentally-on-purpose helped a villain escape the hero who was trying to save the day. Imagine my shock when, a week later, that villain asked me out for coffee.

Long ago, Thor saved the people of Miskander from a rebellious horde. As a thank you for his selfless heroism, he was gifted a crown which he safely stored on Asgard. Until Loki stole it. The Trickster God has been partying hard as a rock band guitarist and thought it would be fun to bequeath the crown to the lead singer, Nihilator, unaware of its true significance—and the corruptive, destructive influence of its true power.

In a world where everyone has a superpower, his was being a geek. Cue was perfectly happy working as a tech super in the dingy basement of Seattle's Superhero Office. Before Natasha Romanoff was an Avenger, she was a Russian spy and assassin, genetically altered by Soviet Union-era scientists to become a super soldier. But someone has stolen a sample of her blood—and the blood of James “Bucky” Barnes, the operative known as the Winter Soldier, another human weapon developed in a Russian laboratory. Whoever took their blood possesses the key to recreating the formula flowing through Natasha and Bucky’s veins—the formula that enhanced their physiology to superhuman levels.

A game is only a game if you can quit. This is something I learned the hard way. I just wanted to let off some steam in virtual reality and ended up getting murdered and imprisoned in the body of one of the undead - slow, clumsy, and cursed to die at the hand of other players over and over again. The only way out of this awful predicament was to find the legendary Scroll of Rebirth, but the helpless plague-ridden corpse would need to be turned into a real killing machine. If only people knew what it was like to level up a dead rogue....
