  • How Systems Impact an Individual's Sense of Belonging with Dr. Erin Halligan-Avery | S4E9
    Oct 9 2026

Belonging is a central component of culture, but what role does an organization's systems play in shaping that culture of belonging?

In this episode, Dr. Erin Halligan-Avery speaks with Dr. Nicole Alioto about her experiences across the P-20 education continuum and nonprofit agencies regarding the positive outcomes that are impacted when people can navigate systems, access support, and feel that their needs are anticipated and respected.

    In this episode, you'll hear:

    • how belonging looks for middle and high school students compared to college students,
    • what belonging means for staff and creating connections,
    • what are the ways organizations can improve systems to improve an individual's sense of belonging, and
    • what results can be impacted when belonging is present or not present.

About Dr. Erin Halligan-Avery: For over 20 years, Dr. Halligan-Avery has worked across higher education, nonprofits, helping professions, and organizational leadership. She has spent her career thinking about the people who do meaningful work, the systems they work within, and what happens when caring starts to require too much of them.

She holds a Ph.D. in Mental Health Counseling and Supervision from the University of Rochester and is a professor of Public Administration, Nonprofit Management at SUNY Brockport. She’s the founder of ConcernCenter, Inc., a resource-navigation SaaS company designed to help people find the right support when they need it.

Across all of her work, her mission the same: she helps people and systems name what's no longer working, stop carrying what isn't theirs, and create clearer, more sustainable ways forward.
