Untangle It All with Ella, Emily & Sam is the unfiltered podcast for hairstylists who are tired of surface-level beauty talk. Hosted by three stylists, we go beyond balayage to unpack the real, raw, and ridiculous sides of life behind the chair. From burnout and boundaries to wild client stories, industry tea, and everything in between.

Whether you're just starting out or twenty years deep, this is your space to laugh, vent, learn, and feel seen. No gatekeeping. No fluff. Just three pros untangling the mess with honesty, humor, and heart.

New episodes weekly. Come hang out, we saved you a seat.

  • What Your Hairstylist Wishes You Knew
    Sep 27 2026

    Send us Fan Mail

We’re catching up on our summers, talking about why we’re so excited for the “ber” months, and then getting into a topic we could probably talk about forever: what hairstylists wish clients knew.

We talk about everything from knowing what an inch of hair actually looks like, what a “trim” really means, and the difference between bangs, layers, and the words clients use to describe the haircut they want. We get into why inspiration pictures are so helpful, when shampooing actually matters for a service, and why some questions that seem obvious to stylists definitely aren’t obvious to clients — and vice versa.

Then we get into colour consultations: why your hair history can mean the last five-plus years, how much previous colour can still be living in your hair, and why knowing exactly what has been done before matters so much. You even get a real-life glimpse of us formulating colour mid-episode while we explain why every colour line, base tone, and formula works differently.

Basically, this episode is a translation guide between clients and hairstylists: what clients say, what we hear, what we’re trying to figure out, and how better communication can make the whole appointment easier for everyone.

And, of course, we finish it off with games.

Back-to-school season sounds organized in theory. In reality, it’s school supplies, haircut appointments, packed lunches, work schedules, forgotten forms, stressed kids, stressed parents, and trying to somehow keep everyone on track.

In this episode of Untangle It All, Ella, Emily and Sam talk about the chaos of getting ready for a new school year from both the working-parent and hairstylist perspectives. We get into the back-to-school salon rush, balancing work and school schedules, Sunday resets, parent guilt, financial pressure, unrealistic expectations, and the things we wish parents put less pressure on themselves about.

We also finish with a rapid-fire back-to-school round and our “Untangle It” moment.. one thing each of us is trying to let go of this school year.

If your September already feels a little chaotic, this one’s for you.

We’re finally back behind the mic! In this episode, we catch up on what’s been happening in our lives and at the salon, share some of our funniest client and coworker moments, and debate a few hairdresser hot takes. We finish things off with Hair Olympics, where we vote on who is most likely to spill colour, forget lunch, drop a comb, cry over a haircut and more.

Expect honest salon talk, plenty of laughs, and the usual chaos.
