You are on the threshold of a dream, perhaps a nightmare. Behind you lies a world constructed largely from things people are quite certain about. The time. The date. Their name. Where they left the car. What their neighbour is doing. And exactly what they meant when they said, “Don’t worry, I know what I’m doing.” Certainty is comforting. It allows us to cross roads, board aeroplanes, get married, buy houses and eat things from the refrigerator whose labels have fallen off. Without it, civilisation would grind to a halt while everybody stood around asking whether anybody was absolutely sure. Fortunately, people usually are. Even when they shouldn’t be. You are about to enter a place where facts may prove temporary. Where conclusions can arrive before the evidence. Where the person who knows exactly what is happening may be the only person in the room who doesn’t. There are people who believe nothing without proof. There are others who require no proof whatsoever. Curiously, both groups are equally difficult at dinner parties. Tonight we may meet experts. Witnesses. People with plans. People with maps. And possibly one or two individuals who have been assured that everything is perfectly under control. They may even believe it. Listen carefully. Somewhere between what we know, what we think we know, and what somebody confidently told us in the pub, lies that small inconvenient territory known as reality.

Do not adjust your radio. The sounds you can hear are part of the transmission. The footsteps. The distant machinery. The door that closes somewhere beyond the room. The voice that seems almost familiar. Listen carefully enough and you may notice something else. Something underneath them. You are on the threshold of a dream, perhaps a nightmare. Behind you lies the familiar world. A noisy place. Engines, televisions, telephones, arguments, music, alarms and the endless murmur of people reassuring one another that everything is still there. Ahead lies somewhere different. You are about to enter a place where noise may only be camouflage. Where the important things happen between one sound and the next. Where a pause may contain more information than a sentence. And where silence is not necessarily the absence of anything. We spend much of our lives trying to avoid it. We turn on radios in empty rooms. We speak when there is nothing to say. We fill every pause because something about an unanswered moment makes us uncomfortable. Perhaps we are right to be uncomfortable. Because silence leaves space. Space for thoughts we have been avoiding. For memories that have been waiting patiently. For questions we hoped nobody would ever ask. And perhaps for things that have learned not to make a sound. Tonight, there will be voices. There will be music. There will be noises whose origins may be difficult to establish. But listen between them. There are places even sound cannot reach. Small gaps in the transmission. Moments when everything stops. If one of those moments lasts a little longer than it should, resist the temptation to fill it. Don’t clear your throat. Don’t speak. And whatever you do, don’t ask if anyone is there. Because silence may not mean nobody answered. It may mean something is listening. Nothing here is entirely real. But everything may be true. Come on in and take a seat. It’s about to begin. Don’t worry, it won’t hurt much. And somewhere beneath all this noise, enjoy the silence.

Do not adjust your radio. The fault is not in the transmission. What you can hear is the sound of something shifting behind the ordinary world. A door settling in an empty room. A footstep arriving before the foot. A familiar voice pausing for just long enough to become someone else. You are on the threshold of a dream, perhaps a nightmare. Behind you lies the reassuring architecture of everyday life. Streets that lead where they led yesterday. Clocks that move obediently forward. People who answer to the same names each morning. You have trusted these things because they have repeated themselves. But repetition is not proof. It is merely a habit reality has acquired. Tonight, that habit is about to be broken. You are about to enter a place where certainty has worn thin, where coincidence has begun making plans, and where the impossible no longer waits to be invited. Listen carefully. Not to the loud sounds. Not to the warnings. Listen for the quiet interruption. The missing word. The second knock when there was no first. The thought that enters your mind already knowing its way around. Do not be alarmed if something seems familiar. That may only mean it has happened before. Do not be reassured if nothing seems familiar. That may mean it has already begun. Somewhere beyond this signal, the world is continuing without you. Another version of this moment is unfolding with one small difference. Perhaps you made a different choice. Perhaps you were never there to make it. Perhaps the voice speaking to you now is not introducing the programme. Perhaps it is trying to remember how the programme ended. Nothing here is entirely real. But everything may be true. Come on in and take a seat. It’s about to begin. Don’t worry, it won’t hurt much.
