John the Baptist did everything right. Priestly blood. Wilderness. Crowds. He pointed away from himself. He put his hands on the Son of God in the Jordan. Then he told the truth about a king and landed in a cell.

Faithfulness did not buy him a painless life. Baptizing Jesus did not make him immune. From prison he sent one question to the only Person who could answer it: Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?
