Children who experience trauma and who have high levels of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES) are often misunderstood during moments of crisis as they attempt to manage their emotions. How the adult responds to these coping mechanisms determines if there are added stressors to the already high levels of anxiety, fear and emotional instability.     I work with children in a high-needs urban setting. The students are exposed to high levels of violence. Often times they come to school with a lot on their minds, having witnessed so many traumatic events inside and outside of the home. In this series titled "Student & Teacher Coping Mechanisms" we are going to explore the influences that affect our choices and decisions - here, referred to as our coping mechansisms. We will get into the theoretical science portion each week while coming to understand these two perspectives (student & teacher) with personal stories spoken with passion and realism. In Episode 1: Secrets In A Shoe Shine Box, you will here the story of a six/seven year old bi-racial boy as he vividly shares his coping mechanism (photos) for the traumatic events happening around him.
