  • Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey: Work of Genius or Bloated Mess?
    Aug 11 2026

Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey has arrived with enormous hype, a massive budget, an all-star cast, and the weight of one of the greatest stories ever told.

But is it actually a great film?

In this episode of Story Joy, we take a close look at Nolan's ambitious adaptation of Homer's The Odyssey and ask whether all the spectacle lives up to the promise.

We discuss the casting of Matt Damon as Odysseus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, and Tom Holland as Telemachus; Nolan's distinctive visual style; the film's use of flashbacks; its anti-war themes; and the decision to reshape some of the more morally complicated elements of Homer's original story.

We also explore one of the biggest questions surrounding the adaptation: what happens when you take a complicated, sometimes selfish, morally ambiguous Greek hero and turn him into a more conventional family man?

The original Odyssey is strange, funny, adventurous, morally messy and surprisingly entertaining. Did Nolan capture what makes the story endure—or did he flatten it into something safer and more familiar?

We also discuss Emily Wilson's influential translation, Nolan's recurring treatment of female characters, the film's dialogue and pacing, its 70mm/IMAX presentation, and whether all that cinematic craftsmanship ultimately adds up to a satisfying movie.

Our verdicts? Let's just say we're nowhere near the early "masterpiece" consensus.

Is The Odyssey a masterpiece, an ambitious misfire, or something in between?

  • The Best Part of Wake Up Dead Man Isn’t the Mystery
    Jul 28 2026

What if the real mystery in Wake Up Dead Man isn't who committed the murder—but what we believe, and why?

In this episode of Story Joy, Michael and Jameel dive into Rian Johnson's Knives Out: Wake Up Dead Man and explore the film's surprisingly thoughtful examination of faith, religion, doubt, atheism, extremism, and the institutions we build around our beliefs.

While the murder mystery itself may not be the strongest part of the film, Wake Up Dead Man gives us something much more interesting to talk about: what happens when genuine faith collides with institutional corruption, rational skepticism, extremism, and the messy reality of being human?

We take a closer look at:

    • Benoit Blanc's rejection of faith and his rationalist worldview
    • Father Judd's sincere belief and his desire to use faith as a force for good
    • Monsignor Wicks and the corruption of religious power
    • Martha and the dangers of extremism and tying your entire identity to a belief
    • The beautiful cathedral conversation between Benoit Blanc and Father Judd
    • Why Father Judd's conversation with Louise may be the film's most important moment
    • The film's ideas about love, mercy, forgiveness and human connection
    • Why the final confrontation between Blanc, Martha and Father Judd brings so many of these themes together
    • And whether Wake Up Dead Man succeeds more as a mystery—or as a meditation on faith and religion

At its heart, this is a film about people who don't have to agree with one another to listen, understand and show each other respect.

And perhaps that's what makes the film's exploration of faith so interesting.

Have you watched Wake Up Dead Man yet? Do you think the film works better as a murder mystery or as a story about faith and belief?
