24 year old waitress Johanne Hatty was killed as she returned to her home in the harbourside suburb of Neutral Bay in the early hours of February 18, 1984 after finishing a night shift. It was determined that she was killed by asphyxiation, and then raped after death. Her murder remained unsolved for 20 years, until DNA analysis from saliva finally cracked the case.

In 1994, pig farmer and devout Christian Ralph Vollmer was complicit in the murder of his wife Joan, after her decomposing body was found at their Antwerp farm in Victoria. Ralph had involuntarily admitted Joan to a psychiatric institution four years earlier, and by January 1993, he had become convinced that she was possessed. Ralph claimed to have noticed unusual changes in Joan's behavior, such as increased swearing and promiscuity, which led him to seek help from amateur exorcists. During the exorcism, Joan was forcibly locked in her house, prayed over, and restrained. On the day of her death, a 22-year-old exorcist was called to their home, and efforts were made to push the supposed demon out of Joan by forcing it up through her mouth. Tragically, Joan died of a heart attack during the procedure, and her autopsy revealed that her thyroid cartilage had been fractured from the pressure applied to her neck. Despite Ralph's conviction that the exorcism had been a success, police discovered Joan's death two days later, leading to his eventual implication in her murder.
