  • Overcoming Trauma: Relentless Courage Of Police Sgt. Michael Sugrue
    Feb 8 2024

Episode 20 focuses on the relentless courage of retired police Sgt. Michael Sugrue to overcome trauma after being forced to use deadly force against a violent armed subject threatening his life and lives of residents and fellow responding officers. Michael details his close-quarters-combat encounter, emotions and impact of trauma on his personal and professional life following this on-duty deadly encounter. For the benefit of those suffering, Micheal bravely shares his journey recovery. What law enforcement, military personnel and most 1st Responder professionals encounter year after year throughout their careers without doubt impacts their mental health. Perhaps none more than what occurs with police involved shooting when an officer’s life is in jeopardy. "Frontline Trauma" sets in, demanding that relentless courage kick in long after the incident life threatening incident subsided. “Silent Struggle Hosted by Military and Police Veterans” are very proud to have aired Episode 20 with Retired Police Sergeant Michael Sugrue co-author of best-selling book “Relentless Courage.” Michael Sugrue has a very riveting and compelling story about how his life went on a tumultuous journey when he had to employ deadly force in the performance of his duties. His explanation of the incidents leading up to this fateful evening will have you spellbound. Sadly, however, this was just the start of what would take him through a maze of mental health issues that culminated with thoughts of taking his own life. Sugrue's many years with the United States Air Force as a captain, and his time as an officer, recently promoted to sergeant with the Walnut Creek Police Department could not prepare him for what was in store following the incident when he had to protect himself from great harm or even death. Sugrue’s fortitude to get his life back on track despite years of court proceedings (criminal and civil) and what he calls a betrayal from his very own police department, is applause worthy. He won the battle against frontline trauma.

  • Stress, Mental Health, and Lawyers: Inside Florida's Largest Prosecutor's Office
    Jan 31 2024

Honorable Katherine Fernandez-Rundle, the elected State Attorney for Florida's largest prosecutor's office, discusses the impact of stress and mental health on her office, lawyers and criminal defendants. With a continuing concern regarding stress and mental health and its effect on so many, Honorable Katherine Fernandez-Rundle provides Robert Asencio and David Magnusson of “Silent Struggle Hosted by Military and Police Veterans” a rare insider's view of the Miami-Dade County's State Attorney's Office - the 11th Circuit Court is considered the 4th to 5th largest prosecutor's office in the U.S. Episode 19 is broken down into two components. The first being, the various diversion programs and specialized courts that tackle the very issue of mental illness and non-violent misdemeanor offenders, such as mental health court, drug court, and veteran’s treatment court. - These programs fall under the purview of what is known as the “Smart Justice Approach” with a focus on treating people as individuals. The second part to the mental health aspect was a discussion on how mental health affects the assistant state attorneys as individuals. Discussion was aimed at the stress these professionals are going through daily coupled with staffing shortages that occur due to better financial opportunities outside of the State Attorney's Office. Recent psychological studies on lawyer well-being are discussed as well. In the end, the fine work the Assistant State Attorneys, Assistant Public Defenders, and Law Enforcement community undertake regarding mental health and protecting those afflicted by it, is beyond admirable. But it is worth noting that they too look to fight the stigma and find strength in protecting themselves as well. It is a consistent battle.
