Episode 8: How Do I Roll for Discipleship?

What happens when you drop four pastors into a fantasy world where no one has ever heard of Jesus? We sit down with Roll for Joy's Steward of Lore, Pastor Ben Loven, to talk about his actual play podcast The Lore of Jesus: Roll for Discipleship — where church council members get pulled through a portal, wrestle with a world of elemental "essences" (including one of pure Umami), and stumble into the deepest questions of faith.

Ben shares how a table of pastors built discipleship into the dice itself, why worship showed up in the roleplay, how an unplanned surrender on a magical lighthouse rewrote an entire season's ending, and the grief episode that sent him straight to a sleeve of Oreos afterward. Plus: a magic item called the Bad News Bears, a deep dive into everyone's favorite stereotypical church characters, and a listener question about turning a gaming hobby into real ministry.

What if the battlefield was more than just a place to fight?

In Episode 7 of the Roll for Joycast, Anthony steps into his role as the Battlemap Boss to explore how maps, terrain, and physical space can transform a tabletop RPG from a simple combat encounter into a living, story-filled world. From towering dragon fights and runaway trains to DIY crafting tips and library 3D printers, the hosts share practical ways to make your game more immersive—whether you're building elaborate terrain or sketching on a dry-erase mat.

Along the way, the conversation takes an unexpected turn into theology, worship, and the power of space itself. How do physical environments shape our attention, creativity, and sense of connection? What can battle maps teach us about ritual, community, and putting what matters most at the center?

Plus, the hosts respond to a listener question about TTRPGs and trauma-informed healing, and Alex shares a Game Design Theopoetics creation: the Boon of Chivaltres, a magical gift that turns protection, storytelling, and player agency into something you can hold in your hand.

Whether you're a dungeon master, player, maker, or dreamer, this episode will inspire you to think differently about the spaces where stories come alive.
