Rewritten in Their Names is an archival history podcast that recovers the lives of enslaved women in colonial Trinidad and situates their stories within the broader history of Caribbean enslavement and the British Empire.
The colonial archive often recorded these women to punish, value, register, or count them. Rewritten in Their Names reads those records differently.
Each episode follows one woman as far as the surviving evidence allows, tracing her name, labor, relationships, movements, and what her documented life reveals about enslavement in Trinidad.
We do not invent what the archive does not tell us. We distinguish what the records establish from what they leave uncertain, and we ask what can still be recovered when documents created by a colonial system are read for the lives contained within them.
The empire counted profit. We are recovering the enslaved women of Trinidad, one record at a time.
